How to Overseed a Thin Lawn in Lake County

Lawns thin out. Summer heat, foot traffic, shade from growing trees, grub damage, and simple age all take their toll. Overseeding is how you rebuild density without tearing everything out and starting over, and in Lake County the fall window is the one to aim for.

Why fall beats spring

Seed needs warm soil to germinate and cool air to establish. Late August into mid September gives you both at once, plus roughly six weeks of good growing weather before the ground gets cold. Just as importantly, crabgrass and most summer annual weeds are done for the year, so your new grass is not competing for space the moment it sprouts.

Spring overseeding works but fights you on both counts: weed pressure is climbing, and young grass hits its first summer with a root system only a few months old.

Prep decides the outcome

Seed that lands on thatch or hard packed clay will not germinate, no matter how good the seed is. Give it soil to touch.

1. 1Mow shorter than usual, around two inches, and bag the clippings so seed can reach the ground.
2. 2Core aerate the lawn, or vigorously rake thin areas to expose loose soil.
3. 3Spread seed at about three to four pounds per thousand square feet for overseeding, or six to eight on genuinely bare ground.
4. 4Apply a starter fertilizer, which is higher in phosphorus to drive root development.
5. 5Water lightly every day, sometimes twice on hot days, keeping the top inch damp but never soggy.

The watering part is where people lose the lawn

This is the step that fails most often. A germinating seed that dries out once is dead, and there is no recovering it. For the first two to three weeks you want short, frequent watering that keeps the surface damp. Only after the new grass is up and mowed a couple of times do you switch to the deep, infrequent soaking that a mature lawn wants.

What to expect, and when

Perennial ryegrass in the blend pops in five to seven days and can make you think the job is done. Turf type tall fescue takes ten to fourteen days, and Kentucky bluegrass is the slow one at fourteen to twenty one days, sometimes longer. Do not panic at day ten and reseed over the top. Give it a month before you judge the result.

Hold off on any weed control product for at least four to six weeks after seeding, and check the label. Most pre emergent herbicides block grass seed just as effectively as they block crabgrass.
