A well built paver patio is one of the best upgrades you can make to a Lake County backyard. It adds real usable living space, it holds its value, and when it is done right it looks better every year. Build for our winters

The biggest difference between a patio that lasts and one that heaves and cracks is what you do not see. Our freeze and thaw cycles are hard on hardscaping, so the base is everything. A proper compacted gravel base, generally six to eight inches for a residential patio in our climate, topped with a bedding layer of coarse sand, is what keeps the surface flat through years of Illinois winters. Skimping there is why so many older patios end up uneven.

Compaction has to happen in layers, a few inches at a time, with a plate compactor. A contractor who dumps the full depth of gravel and runs the compactor over the top once has built you a patio that will settle.

Plan the drainage first

Water is the other thing that makes or breaks a patio. Lake County has a lot of clay soil that drains slowly, so the patio needs a slight slope away from the house, about a quarter inch of fall per foot, and a plan for where that water goes. Done right, you never think about it. Done wrong, you get puddles against the foundation and a sheet of ice in the winter.

Sizing it honestly

The most common regret we hear is that a patio was built too small. A four person bistro set needs roughly ten by ten feet. A six person dining table with room to pull chairs out wants closer to twelve by fourteen. Add a separate seating area around a fire pit and you are realistically at four hundred square feet or more. Lay it out with a garden hose and live with the shape for a few days before anyone digs.

Material choices

Concrete pavers are the workhorse: consistent sizing, huge color range, strong, and replaceable one unit at a time. Natural stone like bluestone or flagstone reads more organic and costs more, both in material and labor, because irregular pieces take longer to set. Clay brick pavers hold their color essentially forever and suit older homes in Libertyville and Deerfield.
