When to Start Your Spring Lawn Cleanup on the North Shore

Every spring we get the same question from homeowners around Vernon Hills and Libertyville: when is it actually safe to start working on the lawn again? Start too early and you compact soggy soil and tear up tender grass. Wait too long and the weeds get a head start you will fight all season.

Let the ground tell you, not the calendar

In our part of Lake County the sweet spot usually lands somewhere between late March and mid April. The real signal is not the calendar. It is the ground. Once the soil has thawed, dried out enough that it does not squish under your boots, and daytime temperatures sit consistently in the 50s, your lawn is ready for attention.

The footprint test is the simplest check there is. Walk across the lawn and look back. If you are leaving clear impressions, the soil is still too wet and every step is compacting it. Give it a few more dry days.

What to do first

A good spring cleanup follows an order. Rushing straight to mowing skips the steps that make the biggest difference for a North Shore lawn coming out of a long winter.

1. 1Clear leaves, sticks, and any leftover debris that trapped moisture and matted the grass over winter.
2. 2Gently rake to lift matted areas and pull up dead thatch so air and light reach the crowns.
3. 3Look for snow mold, those gray or pink matted patches, and rake them out so the grass can breathe.
4. 4Hold off on the first mow until the grass is actively growing and reaches about three inches.
5. 5Wait to fertilize until the lawn is truly green and growing, usually a few weeks after the first mow.

Look for winter damage while you are out there

Spring is when winter damage shows up. Salt burn near driveways and walkways, plow scrapes, vole trails snaking across the turf, and snow mold patches are all common after a Chicago area winter. Catching these early means you can overseed and repair while the cool, damp weather helps new grass take hold.

Do not fertilize too early

The urge to throw down fertilizer the first warm week is strong, and it works against you. Early nitrogen pushes soft blade growth before the roots have recovered, which leaves the lawn weaker going into summer. Let the grass green up on its own, mow it a few times, then feed it.

One timing note worth marking on the calendar: if you plan to apply crabgrass pre emergent, it needs to go down before soil hits 55 degrees, which usually means mid to late April here.
