How Often to Mow Your Lawn During a North Shore Summer

Mowing frequency, cutting height, and the one third rule that keeps North Shore lawns green and healthy through an Illinois summer.

Most homeowners mow on a fixed schedule, the same day every week, no matter what. Your grass does not grow on a schedule though. It grows based on temperature, rain, and sunlight, so the smartest mowing plan flexes with the season.

The one third rule

The single most useful rule in lawn care is simple. Never cut more than one third of the grass blade in a single mow. Scalping the lawn stresses the plant, invites weeds, and leaves those ugly brown patches. If the grass got tall while you were away, bring it down over two mows a few days apart instead of one hard cut.

Through a typical North Shore summer that usually shakes out like this:

  • Spring and early summer, when growth is fastest, most lawns need mowing every five to seven days.
  • Peak summer heat in July and August, growth slows, and every seven to ten days is often plenty.
  • During a dry stretch, raise the deck and mow less often to protect the roots.
  • After heavy rain, expect a growth surge and plan an extra cut rather than one hard scalping.

Cut a little higher than you think

For our cool season grasses, three to three and a half inches is a healthy target for summer. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and crowds out crabgrass before it starts. That one change alone solves a surprising number of the lawn problems we get called about.

Keep the blade sharp

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, and torn tips turn tan and ragged within a day or two. If your lawn looks whitish the morning after a mow, the blade is dull. Sharpening once or twice a season is enough for most homeowners.

Leave the clippings

Unless the lawn was badly overgrown, let the clippings fall. They break down quickly and return a meaningful share of the nitrogen your lawn needs each year. Bagging every cut throws that away and fills your yard waste bin for no reason.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I mow my lawn in Illinois?
Every five to seven days during the fast growth of spring and early summer, and every seven to ten days through the heat of July and August. Mow based on how much the grass has grown rather than a fixed calendar day.
What height should I cut my grass in northern Illinois?
Three to three and a half inches through summer for cool season grasses. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps roots cooler, retains moisture and suppresses crabgrass. Drop only the final mow of the year slightly lower to reduce snow mold.
What is the one third rule for mowing?
Never cut more than one third of the grass blade height in a single mow. Removing more shocks the plant, weakens roots and opens the lawn to weeds. If the grass got long, take it down in two mows a few days apart.
Should I bag or mulch my grass clippings?
Mulch them back into the lawn in most cases. Clippings break down fast and return nitrogen to the soil. Bag only when the lawn was badly overgrown and clippings are clumping on the surface, or when treating a spreading lawn disease.
