What Lawn Care Costs in Vernon Hills and How Pricing Works

Pricing in this trade is opaque, and most companies will not quote a number until they see the property. That is not evasiveness, it is that two houses on the same street can differ by half again in the time they take. Here is what actually goes into the figure so you can read your quotes intelligently.

How mowing is usually priced

Most residential mowing is priced per visit for a defined scope: cut, trim around obstacles, edge as needed, and blow clippings off hard surfaces. The per visit number comes from an estimate of time on site, which depends on a handful of factors.

• Turf square footage, which is the lawn itself, not your lot size. A half acre lot with large beds may mow faster than a quarter acre of open grass.
• Obstacles. Trees, beds, play sets, fences and tight side yards all mean more trimming and more turns, and trimming is slower than mowing.
• Gate width, because whether a commercial mower fits into the backyard can double the time.
• Slopes and drainage, since steep or chronically soft ground requires smaller equipment or hand work.
• Access and parking, particularly on properties where the trailer cannot stage close by.

Why weekly often costs less per cut than biweekly

This surprises people. Biweekly sounds like half the service for half the price, but grass that has grown two weeks in May is too tall to cut in a single pass without violating the one third rule. It takes longer, it leaves heavy clippings that have to be managed, and it stresses the lawn every time.

Most companies therefore price biweekly higher per visit, and many decline it entirely during peak growth. Weekly through spring, stretching out during the July and August slowdown, is both healthier for the lawn and usually better value.

What is not included in mowing

A mowing agreement covers mowing. These are separate services, quoted on their own, and it is worth knowing that going in so a spring invoice does not surprise you.

• Spring and fall cleanups, which are priced by property size and debris volume.
• Core aeration and overseeding, typically once a year in early fall.
• Fertilization and weed control programs, usually sold as a multi application season.
• Mulch installation, priced by the cubic yard delivered and spread.
• Bed edging, shrub trimming and pruning.
• Leaf removal and haul away, often several passes through the fall.
• Snow removal, which is a separate winter agreement entirely.

Comparing quotes without getting fooled

The lowest number is frequently the smallest scope. Before comparing, make sure each quote answers the same questions: does it include trimming and edging every visit, or edging monthly? Does it include blowing off the driveway and walks? How many cleanup passes in fall? Is there a fuel surcharge? What is the visit frequency through the season, and does it change in August?

Also weigh the things that do not appear on a quote at all: whether the company carries liability insurance, whether the same crew comes each week, how quickly they answer the phone, and whether they will still be in business in three years. The landscaping trade has significant turnover, and the cheapest operator is disproportionately likely to disappear mid season.

Where the money is best spent

If the budget is limited, mowing is the easiest thing to do yourself and the seasonal work is where a crew adds the most value. Aeration and overseeding in early fall, a proper fall cleanup, and correctly timed fertilizer applications do more for how a lawn looks than any mowing schedule. Those are also the jobs that need equipment and timing knowledge most homeowners do not have.
